Uruz rune symbol: the sign and its image

Uruz’s sign is two upright strokes, the left one longer, joined at the top by a sloping line, so the rune looks rather like a low gateway. Its old name is generally taken to mean “aurochs”, a huge wild ox, which is the name the Old English rune poem gives it.

In the Scandinavian poems the same word was understood differently, as “drizzle” and “slag”, and scholars still debate which meaning is older. Uruz is the second rune of Freyr’s aett and carries the sound u.

Uruz upright meaning

Uruz is the rune of strength that belongs to you alone: physical stamina, persistence, the capacity to get through a long and gruelling stretch of road. The Old English poem pictures the aurochs as a fearless beast with enormous horns, roaming the moors and never backing down from a fight.

No one yoked such an animal or kept it in a stall, and the last aurochs vanished from Europe’s forests in the seventeenth century. So the strength of Uruz is not the kind handed out with a job title or someone’s permission; it is the kind that rises from within when something truly matters.

When Uruz appears, it often says that you are tougher than you are used to thinking. Perhaps a physically demanding task lies ahead, a move, a long project, or a period when you will have to rely on your own reserves. The rune backs the resolve to begin and not to give up halfway.

But wild strength is hard to steer. Someone riding a surge of energy can easily start arguing where calm persistence would do, wearing themselves out on battles that change nothing. So Uruz asks two questions: what are you willing to spend your energy on, and what will help you replenish it (sleep, movement, simple food, people around whom you don’t have to stay on guard).

Uruz reversed

Reversed, Uruz doesn’t take your strength away; it shows that the strength isn’t where it is needed. One possibility is exhaustion: you have been running on stubbornness alone for a long time, and the reserves are gone, so the real task is not another push but recovery. Another is force without direction: irritation, the urge to settle everything by pressure, arguing just to win. And there is a third: plenty of energy with nowhere to go, which turns into restlessness.

Work out which of these is yours. If your strength is low, lighten the load and give yourself time, without scolding yourself for the pause. If there is too much of it, give it a job where you can wear yourself out without harming yourself or others: a workout, a repair, a hard task with a clear finish line.

Uruz in love: strength that protects rather than pushes

Upright

In a relationship, Uruz brings energy, resolve and physical liveliness: the wish to be close, to do things together, not to keep putting off an important step. For a couple, the rune may mark a time when the two of you face a difficulty side by side and come out of it stronger. If you are single, Uruz suggests waiting less and acting more: going where like-minded people gather, and being the first to start a conversation.

Reversed

Reversed in love, Uruz can point to strength turned against each other: who wins the argument, whose decision prevails. Or to plain tiredness that leaves no energy for tenderness. Neither is cured by pressure. What helps is a breather, a simple task done together and an honest admission: “I’m finding things hard right now, and I need a pause.”

Uruz at work and with money: stamina for the long haul

Upright

In work and money matters, Uruz backs anyone ready for the long haul: a complex project, starting a business of your own, learning something from scratch, physical labour. It adds resolve but doesn’t replace calculation: strength is useful once it is clear where to invest it. Money-wise, Uruz is linked more with hard work than with quick gains: results here are built from your own effort and patience.

Reversed

Reversed in practical matters, Uruz signals overload: you are taking on more than you can carry, or forcing through a decision your colleagues aren’t ready for. It may also be a stubborn hold on a loss-making venture simply because it is painful to write off the effort already spent. Recalculate what actually produces results, hand some tasks over, and avoid big financial decisions while you are worn out.

The Uruz rune’s advice

Pace yourself as you would on a long journey: choose one hard thing you will take on in earnest, and one you will drop, so that you have enough stamina for the first.

Uruz as the rune of the day

Upright

Advice for today
Today you may have the strength for a heavy job you’ve been putting off: a big clear-out, a hard conversation, a tricky task. Start with the least pleasant part while your energy is high.
What will help
Movement: a brisk walk, some exercise or a job that gets you on your feet.
What to avoid
Arguing just to win — today your strength is better spent on the task than on proving a point.

Reversed

Advice for today
Your plans may ask more of you today than you can give, or your energy may slip into irritation. Trim your list to what really matters, and don’t feel guilty about an early night.
What will help
Simple care for your body: a warm meal, water, a short break away from screens.
What to avoid
Trying to force a situation through sheer stubbornness when it clearly won’t budge.
Draw the rune of the day

Uruz: yes or no

Upright

Yes

The rune leans towards “yes”: you have enough strength and resolve to get things moving. Just remember that Uruz speaks not of an easy road but of energy for a hard one.

Reversed

Likely no

For now, probably “no”: the strength for this step is running low or being spent on fighting. Recover first and choose a direction; the question can wait until then.
