Reversed
Reversed, Thurisaz is prickliness without need: a snap reply, arguing for the sake of it, or a thorn turned against yourself. Cool down first, then decide.

Thurisaz rune symbol: the sign and its image

Thurisaz’s sign is a single vertical stroke with a triangular point jutting out halfway up, much like a blackthorn’s spike. The rune’s ancient name is connected with the word “thurs”, which Scandinavian tradition used for giants, and that is its name in both the Norwegian and the Icelandic rune poems.

In the Old English poem it has another name, þorn, meaning “thorn”. A letter Þ with that name is still part of the Icelandic alphabet. Thurisaz is the third rune of Freyr’s aett and carries the sound th, as in “thing”.

Thurisaz upright meaning

Thurisaz is the rune of strength standing guard. The Old English poem describes the thorn as very sharp, painful to take hold of, and harsh on anyone who decides to lie down among the brambles.

There is no malice in that: a wild rose chases no one; it simply protects what is growing. In the same way, the rune speaks of a boundary: your right not to let just anyone in, not to agree to what harms you, not to respond at once to every demand.

Thurisaz often turns up when something blocks the way: a delay, a refusal, an unexpected condition, someone’s resistance. The first impulse is to force a way through. The rune suggests something else: stop and take a proper look at the obstacle. Sometimes it reveals a weak spot in the plan; sometimes it shows that you are rushing towards something it is too early for; and sometimes it says you need to stand up for your interests more firmly than you are used to.

The giants of the old tales are mighty elemental forces, hard to take on head-on. Thurisaz doesn’t teach you to fear them; it teaches you to know your own measure: where to step back, where to hold your ground, where to put up a fence. The most valuable thing this rune offers is a pause before the decisive step.

Thurisaz reversed

Reversed, Thurisaz is the same power to resist, only it goes off too early or strikes in the wrong direction. It might be a sharp reply you later regret, a habit of seeing a threat in every comment, an urge to break through a wall instead of looking for the door.

Sometimes the thorn turns inward, and a strict inner critic lets you neither rest nor begin. Or the reverse may be true: there isn’t enough protection, and you give way where a firm “no” was needed.

The rune doesn’t accuse; it asks you to slow down. Before acting, ask yourself what you are defending against right now, and whether it really is an attack. Sleeping on it often achieves more than the quickest of replies.

Thurisaz in love: boundaries that keep closeness safe

Upright

In love, Thurisaz speaks of healthy boundaries. It reminds a couple that closeness needs a fence of its own: not everything has to be discussed with friends and family, and not every piece of advice should be let into the house.

For each partner, it is also the right to some space of their own. If you are on your own right now, Thurisaz suggests not rushing to open up to the first person who comes along, and noticing who you genuinely feel at ease with.

Reversed

Reversed in a relationship, Thurisaz brings thorns instead of words: reproaches, sarcasm, defensiveness where your partner never meant to attack. Behind it there may be an old wound that was touched by accident. Try to talk about what hurt you in words rather than barbs. And if your boundaries are crossed again and again, you have every right to set them out calmly and firmly.

Thurisaz at work and with money: stop now to avoid a mistake

Upright

At work, Thurisaz often arrives together with an obstacle: a refusal, criticism, a tough condition, an approval that drags on. It is a reason to check the plan, not to abandon it. The rune supports the skill of standing up for your interests: negotiating terms, turning down what doesn’t pay, defending deadlines and price. In money matters, it advises against signing or paying on the run: read it first, recalculate, ask questions.

Reversed

Reversed in practical matters, Thurisaz warns of conflicts sparked by haste and harshness: an email sent in a temper, a heated argument with a manager, a decision made out of spite. If you feel yourself boiling over, put off your reply for at least an hour. In financial questions, it is better not to act under pressure, whether it comes from others or from yourself.

The Thurisaz rune’s advice

Pause before your reply or your next step, and consider what you are actually guarding right now. A firm “no”, said calmly, works better than any sharp remark.

Thurisaz as the rune of the day

Upright

Advice for today
Today may bring hitches and objections. Don’t rush to smash through them. Stop, work out what exactly is in your way, and decide where to give ground and where to calmly stand firm.
What will help
A short pause before answering any request or demand.
What to avoid
Saying yes out of politeness when everything inside you is saying no.

Reversed

Advice for today
Today it’s easy to flare up over a trifle and answer more sharply than you mean to. If something stings, hold back: write your reply, but send it an hour later.
What will help
Letting off steam safely: a walk, a good stretch, a few slow breaths.
What to avoid
Harsh self-criticism and barbed remarks you might later regret.

Thurisaz: yes or no

Upright

Neutral

The rune gives no clear answer: Thurisaz advises against hurrying. An obstacle in the way is a reason to review the plan; once it is clear what it is telling you, the answer will become clearer too.

Reversed

Likely no

Probably “no” if you act right now: a decision made in irritation or under pressure is unlikely to bring what you hope for. Cool down first — the answer may well change.
