Fehu rune symbol: the sign and its image
Fehu’s sign is an upright stave with two short branches rising up and to the right; it looks a little like a Latin F and carries the same sound. The old Germanic word fehu meant cattle, and with them property and wealth in general; its German relative Vieh still means livestock. Fehu is the first rune of Freyr’s aett and of the whole Elder Futhark. The name “futhark” is built from the sounds of the first six runes, and it begins with this one.
Fehu upright meaning
Fehu is the rune of what has already come into your hands: what you have earned, saved or grown through your own effort. It is not only about money. A resource can be a free evening, hard-won experience, a good tool, or the trust of people who are ready to back you. It is no accident that Fehu stands first in the whole row of runes: before building anything or moving on, it helps to know what you are standing on.
In the old world, wealth was something that moved: cattle changed hands, were given as gifts, traded and used as payment. The Old English rune poem says that wealth is a comfort to everyone, yet anyone who hopes for honour must share it freely. So the rune asks not “how do I get more?” but “what am I doing with what I have?” Do you let it work, look after it and share it?
If Fehu turns up in answer to your question, take a calm inventory of your resources and name them out loud, including the ones you have grown used to overlooking. The rune promises no income, but it does hint that you have more to lean on than it seems — and how you use it is up to you.
Fehu reversed
Reversed Fehu doesn’t mean everything is lost. More often the resource is there, but it is working against you or not working at all. It might be spending that brings no joy, debts quietly growing month by month, work done for a thank-you. Or the opposite: thrift turned into stinginess, savings you are too afraid to live on.
Sometimes it is simply a delay: payment, recognition or results arrive later than you hoped. The Scandinavian rune poems give Fehu a darker side too, calling wealth a source of strife between kin. The reversed rune can shine a light on exactly that kind of tension: conversations about money that are hard going within a family or a couple.
What can you do? Start with a simple log of where your money, time and energy go over a week. Then decide what to stop, what to renegotiate, and where to put an honest price on your work.
Fehu in love: care as a shared kind of wealth
Upright
In a relationship, Fehu speaks of what two people build together: a shared home, your own little rituals, plans, a reserve of trust for the hard days. That kind of wealth grows from small things: a thank-you said at the right moment, time set aside for each other with the phone put away. If you are single, the rune is a reminder of your own worth and that there is no need to settle for less than you deserve.
Reversed
Reversed in love, Fehu can mean that feelings have started to resemble possessions: there is such a fear of losing the other person that they are held too tightly, while attention is handed out as if on a schedule. An argument about money and spending often hides a different hurt: a lack of warmth. Try talking not about sums but about what each of you really hopes to receive.
Fehu at work and with money: earn it, keep it, put it to use
Upright
At work and in your finances, Fehu is the rune of what you have earned. It suggests treating your income, skills and connections as capital you can manage: what brings in the most, what is worth developing, where it is time to raise the price of your work. This is a good time for bookkeeping and planning. New investments or purchases are possible, but base the decision on figures rather than on a hunch.
Reversed
Reversed in practical matters, Fehu warns of leaks: money trickles away on small things, a task takes more energy than it returns, payment comes late. The opposite imbalance is possible too: being afraid to spend even on what you need in order to grow. Draw up an honest list of income and outgoings, mark what could be cut, and don’t be shy about reminding people of what you are owed.
The Fehu rune’s advice
Take an inventory of your wealth: not just money, but skills, time and the people around you. Then pick one thing to look after this week, and one thing to share just because.
Fehu as the rune of the day
Fehu: yes or no
Upright
Yes
The rune’s answer is “yes”: you have something solid to build on. But Fehu speaks of resources, not guarantees; the outcome depends a great deal on how you use them.
Reversed
Likely no
Probably “no”, at least for now. Reversed Fehu shows that the energy or means for this step are draining away elsewhere; patch those gaps first, then come back to the question.
Questions about the Fehu rune
What does the Fehu rune mean?
Fehu is the rune of resources and how you handle them. Its name is linked to cattle, an ancient measure of wealth, but its meaning is broader: money, time, skills, the trust of others. The rune invites you to value what you have, look after it and share it.
What does reversed Fehu mean?
Reversed Fehu points to an imbalance in how resources are handled: they leak away, get spent to no purpose, or sit idle out of fear of losing them. It isn’t a verdict, just a prompt to bring order to spending, agreements and energy.
What does Fehu mean in relationships?
In relationships, Fehu speaks of what both people contribute: attention, time, care, shared plans. Upright, it is a warm exchange; reversed, it is a sign that someone is giving too much or that feelings have become something to keep count of.
Is Fehu a money rune?
Partly. It is the rune most often linked with money, and with reason: its ancient name meant cattle, the main form of property. But it speaks of any wealth that can be grown, and it promises no profit. Instead, it helps you take a sober look at what you have.
