In short
- Upright
- The wheel turns: life starts moving again, and the key is noticing the moment when circumstances shift in your favour.
- Reversed
- The wheel seems stuck: familiar patterns repeat, plans are delayed, and resisting change only deepens the sense of standstill.
Wheel of Fortune: symbolism and imagery
On the Rider–Waite Wheel of Fortune card, a great golden wheel marked with letters turns among the clouds. A blue sphinx holding a sword sits on top, a yellow snake slides down the left side, and a red jackal-headed figure lifts the wheel from below on the right. In each corner a winged creature rests on a cloud with a book.
- The lettered wheel
- The letters T, A, R and O on the rim read round the circle from any point, since the wheel has no beginning or end. Between them are Hebrew letters, and alchemical signs mark the centre: everything is connected and moving.
- The sphinx with a sword
- It sits perfectly still while the wheel spins beneath it: calm wisdom that sees the whole cycle and keeps its balance at every turn.
- The snake and the jackal-headed figure
- The snake slips downwards while the red figure climbs: decline and rise are parts of one movement. No place on the wheel lasts forever.
- The four winged creatures
- An angel, an eagle, a bull and a lion with their books are steady anchors at the edges of the picture. While everything turns, something stays constant: knowledge, values, experience.
- Clouds and sky
- The wheel hangs in the sky with no footing on the ground: much of this movement is out of our hands. How we respond to it, though, is ours to choose.
Wheel of Fortune upright
The Wheel of Fortune, card ten of the Major Arcana, is perhaps the most restless card in the deck. It speaks of moments when life changes direction on its own: an unexpected call, a chance meeting, a decision made by someone else — and suddenly what had been standing still begins to move. It might be a lucky coincidence, a new chapter, or simply a sense that the wind has changed.
The card’s central idea is the cycle. Highs and lows follow each other like the seasons, and no position on the wheel is permanent. If things are hard right now, the Wheel reminds you that this too will pass. If everything is going smoothly, it gently suggests not taking good fortune for granted.
Even so, the Wheel of Fortune doesn’t turn you into a passenger. Plenty really is beyond your control (the weather, other people’s choices, circumstances). But your attention is yours: noticing a door as it opens, saying “yes” at the right moment, letting go of what has run its course.
The card invites you to move with change rather than against it, and to hold your course even when the road bends. Sometimes a turning point only becomes visible in hindsight, and then it’s clear why it was needed.
Wheel of Fortune reversed
The reversed Wheel of Fortune often turns up when life seems stuck in a loop. Similar conflicts, recurring mistakes at work, a familiar story in relationships, only with new faces. Or plans are postponed again and again, and no amount of effort speeds things up. It’s tempting to call it bad luck and give up.
The card offers another way of looking at it. Repetition is a clue: something in the cycle hasn’t been understood yet, and it will keep coming back until you choose differently. Separate what you truly can’t influence from what you can change, such as a habitual reaction, a word or a small decision. A delay can be useful too: it gives you time to prepare for the wheel’s next turn.
Wheel of Fortune in love: meetings that arrive right on time
Upright
In a relationship
Your relationship may enter a new stage, whether living together, meeting each other’s families, starting something side by side or going through a change that brings you closer. The Wheel suggests not holding on to the old format just because it’s familiar: couples grow, and their rhythm shifts.
If you’re single
A meeting may happen out of the blue, perhaps while travelling, through mutual friends or somewhere you wandered into almost by accident. The Wheel of Fortune loves coincidences, but they need you to meet them halfway: go out, accept the invitation, speak first, even if it feels a little awkward.
Reversed
In a relationship
If arguments keep running round the same track, the trouble probably isn’t the trigger but a script you’re both repeating. Try to spot the moment where the conversation always takes a wrong turn, and do something different there: listen instead of defending yourself.
If you’re single
You may keep being drawn to similar people, with stories that end the same way. That isn’t a verdict; it’s a reason to look at your own choices: what exactly attracts you, and how much of it do you actually need? A new cycle begins with a different decision.
Wheel of Fortune at work: catching a tailwind
Upright
Your working life may take a turn: a stalled project gets moving, a vacancy appears, an old contact remembers you. Be ready: update your CV, keep your portfolio to hand, answer your emails. The Wheel opens a window, but you have to climb through it yourself before it closes.
Reversed
Work may grind along for reasons that have nothing to do with you: a restructure, someone else’s deadlines, decisions from above. Spending energy fighting that only wears you out. Put it instead into what stays with you whatever happens: skills, connections, order in your own tasks.
Wheel of Fortune and money: ebb, flow and a reserve
Upright
Your finances may start to shift: unexpected income, a good offer, a debt finally repaid. Treat it as an opportunity, not a permanent state of affairs, and resist raising your spending straight away. A good spell is the right time to set some money aside for a quieter turn of the wheel.
Reversed
Income may fluctuate or arrive late, and spending may follow an old, unhelpful pattern. Notice which money habit keeps bringing you back to the same spot. Don’t try to win it back with risky moves; a calm review of your budget is worth more right now than any bet on luck.
Wheel of Fortune and health: rhythms worth listening to
Upright
The Wheel of Fortune is a reminder of natural rhythms: sleep and waking, effort and rest, the turning seasons. Work with them, and your energy may recover more easily. A good time to ease gently back into a routine.
Reversed
If the same niggles keep coming back, don’t write them off as bad luck. Note what tends to come before them and raise it with a doctor: a recurring signal deserves attention.
This isn’t medical advice: for health questions, please see a doctor.
The card’s advice
Upright
Which cycle in your life is ending now, and which is beginning? Let yourself go with the flow while keeping a hand on the helm.
Reversed
What recurring lesson is life offering you once more? Perhaps this time you can move through it differently.
Wheel of Fortune: yes or no, upright and reversed
Upright
Yes
The wheel is turning your way: circumstances are lining up in your favour. It’s a “yes” that asks you to act in good time, because a good moment won’t wait until you feel completely ready.
Reversed
Likely no
Likely no, at least for now. The wheel has slowed, and forcing events could lead you into a familiar mistake. Let the situation ripen and return to the question once it starts to move.
Wheel of Fortune as your card of the day
Wheel of Fortune in spread positions
In the past position
A recent turn of events (a change you had little say in) set in motion what is happening to you now.
As an obstacle
Clinging to how things were can get in the way, as can feeling that nothing depends on you when it does.
As advice
Move with the change: notice which way the situation is turning, and step the same way while the window is open.
As the outcome
The situation may move into a new cycle: what has long been standing still could start to move.
Example
Someone with a small pottery studio asks whether orders will pick up after a quiet summer. In a Celtic Cross, the Wheel of Fortune lands in the near-future position. It doesn’t promise a rush of customers; it says the lull is part of a cycle and things may shift. The advice is to prepare in advance: refresh the shop window and get back in touch with regular customers.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Wheel of Fortune mean in tarot?
It’s a card of change, cycles and turning points. It says that life doesn’t stand still, and invites you to notice opportunities as they open while staying flexible about what lies outside your control.
What does the reversed Wheel of Fortune mean?
Delays, a sense of stagnation, or familiar patterns repeating. Rather than blaming bad luck, the card suggests working out which lesson in this cycle is still unlearned, and making a different choice within it.
What does the Wheel of Fortune mean in relationships and as feelings?
A new stage in the relationship or an unexpected meeting. Couples may go through changes that bring them closer; singles may meet someone by happy coincidence. Reversed, it points to repeating patterns. As feelings, it points to emotions that are shifting: interest may be growing or changing, so it’s worth watching where the wheel turns.
Is the Wheel of Fortune a yes or no card?
Upright, it’s a yes, provided you’re ready to act when the moment comes. Reversed, it tilts towards “no” or “not now”: wait until the situation starts to shift.
Is the Wheel of Fortune a fate you can’t change?
No. The card admits that some circumstances are beyond your control, but your response to them is in your hands. The Wheel invites you to choose carefully how you act at each turn rather than surrender to fate.
