Wunjo rune symbol: the sign and its image

Wunjo’s sign looks like a Latin P: a small triangular flag sits at the top of a vertical stroke. The rune’s old name means “joy”, and German Wonne, “bliss”, comes from the same root. In Old English writing this rune, called wynn, long served as the letter for the sound w. It has no place in the Younger Futhark, so the Scandinavian rune poems don’t mention it. Wunjo is the eighth and last rune of Freyr’s aett and carries the sound w.

Wunjo upright meaning

Wunjo is the rune of joy: not of a noisy party, but of the calm contentment that comes when everything is in its place. Its lines in the Old English poem read almost like a recipe: joy belongs to the one who knows little of grief, pain and worry, who has prosperity, contentment and a secure place to live. There is nothing magical in that list, only the simple supports on which a good life rests. Wunjo simply asks you to pay attention to them.

Wunjo often appears when a difficult stretch is behind you, or when you are among people with whom you can be yourself: family, a team, a circle of friends. It speaks of belonging, of being accepted, and of your presence meaning something to others. It is also the joy of work done well, a result you are glad to show and happy to put your name to.

An important trait of this rune is that joy doesn’t have to be saved for better times. Wunjo asks what is good in your life already, and suggests sharing it: inviting friends round, thanking your team, marking a small victory. Shared joy doesn’t shrink; it simply becomes something you have in common.

Wunjo reversed

Reversed, Wunjo speaks of a joy that stays just out of reach. It may feel as though life is passing you by, as though the celebration is happening somewhere without you, and as though you still haven’t found your place in a group or a team. Sometimes joy gets postponed: “once I’ve finished this project, once we’ve moved — then.” And sometimes it is the opposite: a wish to keep up a picture of well-being at any cost, overlooking what needs attention.

The rune isn’t saying that happiness won’t come. It invites you to look honestly at what exactly isn’t bringing you joy: people, work, tiredness, expectations that weren’t met. Then start small: find one person you feel at ease with, one activity that leaves you warmer, and allow yourself these without conditions.

Wunjo in love: a joy you notice together

Upright

In love, Wunjo brings ease and harmony: you enjoy being together for no particular reason, you get each other’s jokes straight away, and small disagreements don’t grow into quarrels. For a couple, this is a time to delight in each other and in your own little traditions. If you aren’t part of a couple, Wunjo reminds you that joy needn’t wait for a relationship: friends and the things you love make life full already.

Reversed

Reversed in a relationship, Wunjo points to a shortage of joy: everything seems fine, yet being together has become dull or lonely. Or one of you is trying to keep up a picture of “everything’s wonderful” while hurts go unspoken. Don’t wait for a special occasion: arrange a simple evening just for the two of you, and talk honestly about what each of you needs in order to feel happy.

Wunjo at work and with money: the pleasure of a shared result

Upright

At work, Wunjo speaks of teamwork and satisfaction: the project is moving, the team understands one another, your contribution is noticed. A good time to celebrate what has been achieved, thank your colleagues, finish what you started and enjoy the result. In money matters, the rune speaks of being content with what you have and of sensible spending on things that bring joy, without extravagance and without cutting back on everything.

Reversed

Reversed in practical matters, Wunjo brings discord and dissatisfaction: there is tension in the team, your efforts seem to go unseen, and work no longer gives you pleasure. Think about what you can change yourself: discuss how tasks are divided, ask for feedback, find the part of the work that still interests you. Purchases made “to cheer yourself up” are worth thinking over twice right now.

The Wunjo rune’s advice

In the evening, write down three things that made you glad today, however small. Then share one of them with someone who will enjoy it too.

Wunjo as the rune of the day

Upright

Advice for today
Today is good for spending time with the people you belong with: family, friends, colleagues who are easy company. Celebrate a small success, say something kind and let yourself be glad without reservations.
What will help
A shared task or dinner with people who make you feel relaxed and cheerful.
What to avoid
Holding yourself apart when you’re invited to join in.

Reversed

Advice for today
Today joy may feel far away and the people around you like strangers. Don’t demand cheerfulness of yourself: treat yourself to a small pleasure, and in the evening message someone who makes you feel warm.
What will help
A chat with someone who doesn’t need you to keep smiling.
What to avoid
Postponing joy until the moment “when everything settles down”.

Wunjo: yes or no

Upright

Yes

The rune leans towards “yes”: what you have in mind is in tune with your wishes and may bring joy, especially if people close to you are involved. Wunjo is the rune of harmony, and its “yes” sounds especially warm.

Reversed

Likely no

Probably “no”, at least in the form you have planned it. Reversed Wunjo suggests that this step is unlikely to make you happier; first work out what you truly want.
