Perthro rune symbol: the sign and its image

Perthro’s sign is an upright stave with an angle jutting out to the right from each end; together they look like a cup lying on its side, open to the right. The rune stands for the sound p. It was rare in early Germanic words, so the sign itself is rare in inscriptions. Its old name (peorð in Old English) has never been convincingly explained: what it meant is unknown. Perthro is the sixth rune of Hagal’s aett.

Perthro upright meaning

Perthro is perhaps the most mysterious rune of the Elder Futhark, which suits its meaning well. It no longer appears in the Younger Futhark, the shorter row of runes used in the Viking Age, so the only description we have comes from the Old English rune poem.

There it is said always to bring play and laughter to high-spirited company in the beer hall. Hence the guesses that the name meant a dice cup, a gaming piece or the game itself, but none of them has been proven.

The rune speaks of what has not yet been revealed: chance, a coincidence of circumstances, a side of things you cannot see yet. The unknown is not the enemy here. In a game it is precisely the unpredictability that brings it to life: an outcome known in advance would amuse no one. Perthro invites you to face uncertainty as a player rather than a spectator: make your move, watch what changes, and don’t demand guarantees that life doesn’t give.

If Perthro turns up in answer to your question, part of the answer may still be hidden, from you or from everyone involved. It helps to ask yourself: what can I find out now, and what will only become clear with time? Periods like this often awaken unexpected abilities, too: intuition, a sense of humour, a talent for improvising.

Perthro reversed

Reversed, Perthro says that playing with the unknown has stopped being a game. The thrill can tip into recklessness: everything rides on luck, and more is at stake than you are prepared to lose. Or the opposite: uncertainty is so unsettling that you check, recalculate and look for the catch again and again, and never quite dare to make a move.

Another side of the reversed rune is secrets that have become a burden: things left unsaid in a family, someone else’s secret you are keeping, or one of your own that makes it hard to be open with people.

What helps? Separate facts from guesswork: what do you know for certain, and what are you only assuming? Don’t make important decisions in the heat of the moment or in a panic: give yourself time to cool down. The unknown shrinks not through total control but through small steps and honest questions.

Perthro in love: what you don’t yet know about each other

Upright

In love, Perthro is a rune of discovery. Even in a long relationship, your partner has sides you don’t suspect: dreams, fears, interests set aside long ago. The rune suggests letting each other surprise you by asking new questions and trying unfamiliar things together. If you are unattached right now, Perthro speaks of chance meetings and unexpected turns, but it doesn’t promise them; it simply advises not closing doors that seem unimportant.

Reversed

In a couple, reversed Perthro sometimes points to secrets that have grown into a wall between two people, or to jealousy fed by guesswork. Feelings can turn into a game, too: hints instead of words, tests, attempts to provoke a reaction. Games like that wear both people out. It is calmer and more honest to say plainly what is troubling you, and to agree on what each of you considers private and what is shared.

Perthro at work and with money: a move you can’t fully calculate

Upright

At work, Perthro speaks of situations where much depends on things outside your control: a new market, a job interview, talks with an unfamiliar partner, a creative experiment. What helps here is not trying to foresee everything but being ready to improvise and spot unexpected chances. With money, it matters to tell sensible risk from gambling: only risk a sum you can comfortably do without, and let calculations, not gut feeling, make the call.

Reversed

Reversed at work, Perthro warns against blind bets: dubious schemes, promises of easy money, decisions made on a wave of excitement. The opposite extreme is possible too: being so afraid of making a mistake that you let the moment pass. Check what information you have and what is missing, ask the awkward questions and leave yourself a way out.

The Perthro rune’s advice

Pick one situation in which you are waiting for complete clarity and take a small trial step in it — one that can be undone. See what it reveals: sometimes the answer only appears once you are moving.

Perthro as the rune of the day

Upright

Advice for today
Something unplanned may turn up today: a meeting, an offer, a change of plans. Leave a little room for improvisation and greet the unexpected with curiosity, without rushing to decide whether it’s good or bad.
What will help
A new route, an unfamiliar dish or a question you don’t usually dare to ask.
What to avoid
Trying to plan the day down to the minute and guess every answer in advance.

Reversed

Advice for today
Today worry may push you towards needless checking or, the other way round, towards a risky “it’ll be fine”. Before any important decision, pause and ask yourself: what do I actually not know?
What will help
One direct question instead of a dozen guesses about other people’s intentions.
What to avoid
Decisions made on a gambler’s high, and checking up on someone close to you “just in case”.
Draw the rune of the day

Perthro: yes or no

Upright

Neutral

The rune gives no direct answer: Perthro says the outcome is still hidden and depends on circumstances you can’t see. Gather more information: the answer will be easier to see once the picture comes into focus.

Reversed

Likely no

For now, more likely “no”: reversed Perthro warns that you would be deciding blindly or on a rush of excitement. First find out what you don’t know; then any risk will be a conscious one.

Questions about the Perthro rune

What does the Perthro rune mean?

Perthro is the rune of mystery, chance and play. It speaks of what is still hidden: unknown circumstances, unexpected possibilities, undiscovered sides of yourself. The rune invites you to accept uncertainty as part of life and to act without waiting for complete clarity.

What does reversed Perthro mean?

Reversed Perthro shows that your relationship with the unknown has gone awry: fear pushes you to control everything, the thrill of risk pushes you too far, and secrets weigh on you. It is no bad omen but rather a cue to separate facts from guesses and act with more care.

What does Perthro mean in relationships?

In relationships, Perthro speaks of what you have yet to learn about each other and the joy of those discoveries. Reversed, it points to secrets, jealousy or games with feelings that are better replaced by a straightforward conversation.

Is Perthro the rune of fate?

That label appears in modern books, but the old sources don’t support it: no one knows what the rune’s name meant. It is more accurate to see Perthro not as a verdict but as a sign that the outcome is still open and you can influence it.
