Knight of Wands: symbolism and imagery

On the Rider–Waite Knight of Wands card, a knight in armour sits on a horse that rears up on its hind legs. In one hand the rider holds a short wand with green shoots, in the other the reins; a flame-orange plume streams from the helmet, and the yellow tunic is patterned with black salamanders. Far off in the desert stand three pyramids.

The rearing horse
Power at its peak, ready to break into a gallop. Energy like this is hard to hold back: one more moment and it will carry you forward.
The raised wand
An idea carried high, like a banner. The Knight doesn’t hide his cause; he rides out into the world with it.
The plume and flames on the armour
Fire shows in every part of the figure: passion, excitement, a hot temper. The Knight can’t do anything by halves.
Salamanders on the tunic
The same pattern the Page wears, but now it’s worn over armour. A student’s curiosity has turned into the resolve to act.
Pyramids in the desert
Far-off lands, the road, the unknown. Yet the desert is also a reminder that fire needs fuel, or it soon burns out.

Knight of Wands upright

The Knight of Wands is the suit’s fire in motion. Where the Page is still examining the spark, the Knight has already leapt into the saddle and is galloping off with it. The card speaks of courage, passion, excitement and a readiness to act right now: start a project, hit the road, move house, make yourself heard. It’s full of life and short on doubt.

Like the other court cards, the Knight can describe your state of mind, your role in the situation or a specific person (of any gender or age) who sweeps others along with their drive. Life is never dull around such people: they catch fire themselves and set others alight. But this energy has a particular quality: it works best at the start and over short distances.

That’s why the upright Knight of Wands backs action but asks you not to drop the reins. Look at the horse: it has reared up, and a second later it will bolt. The question is who chooses the direction: the rider or the impulse.

If you know where you’re heading, the card gives you a green light: time to move, take sensible risks and stop waiting for the perfect moment. If there’s no goal yet, it helps to name one first, even if only to yourself.

Knight of Wands reversed

The reversed Knight of Wands is energy that can’t find its channel. It may spill out as irritation, sharp words and decisions you later regret. Or it may spin its wheels: you talk a lot about plans, get fired up, dash off, and then abandon everything halfway to chase the next idea. Sometimes the card describes delays in travel or moves, or a feeling that haste is making everything slip through your fingers.

The card isn’t asking you to put the fire out. It asks you to slow down and choose a direction: which of the things you’ve started really matter, and which are just a way of not sitting still? Pause before big decisions, especially those born on a wave of emotion. One thing seen through to the end will satisfy you more than a dozen brilliant starts.

Knight of Wands in love: passion that needs more than a spark

Upright

In a relationship

Passion and spontaneity return: a last-minute trip, a bold confession, an evening that didn’t go to plan and turned out to be the best of the month. Enjoy the heat, but don’t forget quiet conversations too. A fire needs more than a spark; it needs something that will burn for a long time.

If you’re single

You may meet someone who captivates you from the first minute, or you may be the one who acts boldly and doesn’t wait to be asked. It’s a time for flirting and adventure. Just notice whether you want a fling for a couple of weeks or something more.

Reversed

In a relationship

Impatience may flare into quarrels over small things, and sharp words may hurt more than intended. Sometimes one partner races ahead while the other can’t keep up. Before answering in the heat of the moment, take a pause and ask yourself what is really behind the outburst.

If you’re single

Relationships may start in a blaze and burn out just as quickly. If this keeps happening, consider whether you’re mistaking infatuation for the thrill of the chase. A little more time before serious steps will show whether the feeling has a future.

Knight of Wands at work: a dash with a clear aim

Upright

A good time for bold moves: pitch your idea to management, take a product to market, apply for a job in another city. Your drive is infectious. To keep it from going to waste, decide in advance what the result should look like and which details mustn’t be missed at speed.

Reversed

Haste may lead to missed deadlines and half-finished tasks, and irritation to clashes with colleagues. Perhaps you’re grabbing at everything at once, or itching to quit without thinking through where to go next. Before acting, sketch a plan for at least a week and close one task you’ve already started.

Knight of Wands and money: excitement kept in check by the numbers

Upright

With money, the Knight of Wands brings a gambler’s excitement: backing an idea, buying tickets for a trip, chancing a new opportunity. Boldness can pay off, but it doesn’t guarantee income. Before you act, work out how much you could lose without harming yourself, and stay within that limit.

Reversed

The reversed card warns against emotional purchases and decisions made “before the excitement wears off”. If you feel like investing right now, taking a loan or dashing off on a costly trip, wait at least a day and check the figures. Speed rarely works in your favour here.

Knight of Wands and health: energy that needs breathing space

Upright

There’s plenty of energy, and you’ll want to spend it: running, cycling, team sports. That’s wonderful as long as you remember to warm up and recover: a hot start without preparation can easily tip into overload.

Reversed

Impatience and tension may affect your sleep and wellbeing. Slow the pace, leave room in your day for a breather, and if unpleasant symptoms appear, don’t play the hero: book an appointment with a doctor.

This isn’t medical advice: for health questions, please see a doctor.

The card’s advice

Upright

Where is your heart truly calling you? Head there boldly, but keep a firm hold on the reins.

Reversed

Before you charge ahead, take a breath. How could you direct your energy so that it works for you?

Knight of Wands: yes or no, upright and reversed

Upright

Yes

Yes, if you’re ready to act now and know what you want. The Knight of Wands backs bold steps, trips and new ventures, but his “yes” is about movement, not a guaranteed result.

Reversed

No

No, at least not at this pace. A decision made in a hurry or in the heat of emotion may lead to disappointment. Cool down, think through the details and ask again once things are clearer.

Knight of Wands as your card of the day

As your card of the day, the Knight of Wands brings energy to spare, so channel it into one thing you’ve been putting off. A good day for a bold call, a spontaneous outing or a first step in a new project. Just don’t argue hotly or promise more than you can deliver.

Knight of Wands in spread positions

  1. In the past position

Recently you acted boldly and fast (you set off, started a project, took a risk), and the consequences of that dash are unfolding now.

  2. As an obstacle

What gets in the way is haste: wanting everything at once, abrupt decisions and a habit of dropping what you’ve started for the next idea.

  3. As advice

Act boldly and don’t wait for the perfect moment, but first decide where you’re steering the horse, and why.

  4. As the outcome

Things may move quickly and energetically, especially if your drive is backed by a clear goal you’ve named honestly.

In a spread on me, my partner and what’s between us, someone asks how to respond to their partner’s sudden suggestion to drop everything and spend a year by the sea. The Knight of Wands in the partner position speaks of real fire, not a whim. The advice is not to smother the impulse but to turn it into a plan: dates, money, remote work.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Knight of Wands mean in tarot?

It’s a card of action, courage and passion. It speaks of an impulse looking for an outlet: to begin, to travel, to take a risk. It may be your own mood or someone who carries others along.

What does the reversed Knight of Wands mean?

Energy with nowhere to go: haste, irritation, abrupt decisions or starts that lead nowhere. The card advises slowing down, choosing one direction and not making important decisions on emotion.

What does the Knight of Wands mean in relationships and as feelings?

Passion, spontaneity and vivid moments. For a couple, it’s a reason to bring adventure back; for singles, a bold new encounter. It’s just worth checking whether this fire has depth and staying power. As feelings, it describes passionate, impulsive interest: someone is strongly drawn to you right now, though it may burn hot and fast.

Upright, it’s a yes, especially when the question is about action, travel or a new venture. Reversed, it’s a no, at least for now: haste could spoil everything.
